Drupal: Node ID from URL with Pathauto .. working!

Added: Thursday, January 14, 2010

I’m working on developing a website in the highly wonderful, vastly powerful Drupal, and I have to admit, it’s truly wonderful. I’ve spent some 80 hours building a website from the ground up and I am eager to unleash it on the world for all its fury.

One struggle I ran into that I thought I might share with the world was involving views and arguments. Here was the scenario: I had user pages, and wanted to simply list their content types in a nice indexed list below their profile with pagination. Simple enough, right? Not for me. After struggling and stalking tens of websites on Google, I came to the conclusion that my problem was not necessarily with Pathauto, but with the context I was working with.

The argument I was looking for in this situation was the “get user ID from path.” On a side note: Pathauto, in the end, was able to pull the ID from the path, despite the fact that, intuitively, I thought I wanted the “get user name from path,” which seemed to be the most obvious way.

Where I really ran into the problem was with the context I was trying to pull the argument from. By simply inserting a single argument in the “arguments” section of views, I was not being specific enough. Since my users all live at user/username , I realized I needed to insert a “Global: Null” argument and provide the default argument of “user” for the first argument. Then, I inserted the “get user from URL” option and, Viola!, it worked in the preview pane. Inserted as a block on my user pages, I breathed a sigh of relief.

Drupal might be the best thing that has happened to me in the last few months, and I’m eager to learn and explore more as I work with it.
